Artist + Researcher 3 LIVE at the Arizona Science Center

Introduction

The Phoenix Bioscience Core (PBC) hosted a successful and inspiring evening on October 23rd, showcasing the groundbreaking work of eight talented artists and researchers at the Arizona Science Center. This event was part of the Artist and Researcher Program (ARx3), a unique initiative designed to bridge the gap between science and the arts.

Over the course of nine months, paired artists and researchers collaborated to transform cutting-edge life science research taking place at the PBC into stunning works of art. The result was a diverse collection of pieces, including sculptures, paintings, and digital art, each reflecting the innovative discoveries and advancements being made in biosciences and healthcare.

The ARx3 program offers an invaluable opportunity for artists to immerse themselves in the world of science, while researchers gain new perspectives on their work through the lens of creativity. This collaboration highlights the powerful intersection of art, science, and innovation, encouraging community engagement and inspiring new ways of thinking about scientific discovery.

Featured Artworks Include:

  • “Colonized” by Shah Noor Shafqat & Angel Algarin
  • “Threads of Caring” by Alison Lane, Allie Peckham, and Aaron Guest
  • “Dr. Root’s Health Quest: Player Totems” by Kevin Clark & Dr. Hayley Root
  • “The Cerebrovascular Complexity of a Stroke” by Kyllan Maney and Rayna Gonzales
  • “Tether Vane” by Matthew Baral and Paul R. Standley, PhD
  • “Healing Hands, Resilient Spirit” by Tara Sharpe and Pamela Rogers Bosch
  • “Line Translation Error Generation 1 and 2” by Tra Bouscaren and Ana Gervassi
  • “Metastasize vs Mathematize” by Bacpac and Kamel Lahouel

These art pieces explored critical topics such as mental health stigma, caregiving, dementia, and the experience of stroke. Visitors were visually guided through themes like the role of community in caregiving, the impact of social misconceptions, and a deeper understanding of cellular health and the effects of stroke on the human body. One painting depicted an individual who had experienced a stroke, surrounded by caregivers and community, while confronting and feeling the emotional loss of autonomy.

With approximately 100 attendees, the event celebrated not only the talent of the artists but also the power of interdisciplinary collaboration. It emphasized the importance of bridging the gap between science and art and encouraged the community to engage with innovative ideas that transcend traditional boundaries.

The PBC is proud to support initiatives like ARx3 that foster connections between scientific research and artistic expression. As we continue to support innovation in all its forms, we encourage everyone to explore the intersectionality of art and science.
